Ryzhkov and Volkov Work for
Last Saturday the sports complex Meridian saw Ukraine's male basketball
national team beat the Belarusian national in the last tenth match of the
1999 Euro qualifiers: 79/67 (40/35). Ukraine's Leonid Yailo scored most
of the points: 26. Regrettably, this victory, just like the one in Denmark
(83/61) did not allow Volodymyr Ryzhov's and Oleksandr Volkov's players
to make it to the European basketball forum. They had to make do with third
place in their Group C (five victories). However, by additional standings
they turned out to be the only third team failing to get to the 1999 Eurobasket
finals, giving way to the Slovenian, Greek, German, Russian, Macedonian,
Hungarian, Spanish, Israeli (the latter two from the same Group), Bosnian,
Lithuanian, Croatian, Italian, Turkish, and Czech teams.
Andriy Shaptala, Ukrainian national's second coach, stressed that the
play was not spectacular, with players on both sides trying to get solo
parts, doing so quite unjustifiably. At the same time, this game played
an extremely important role for the team's future. In Copenhagen, while
the score in the other groups was still unknown, later to determine Ukraine's
unenviable position, the lads played very well. Too bad they will stay
home just because of one misfire (losing to the Danes in Kyiv), yet the
team is in Ryzhov's and Volkov's good and ambitious hands, so there is
every reason to expect good and better results before long.

Ukrainian Biathletes Collect Medals
In Europe and America
The world biathlon's sixth round ended on one of the Winter Olympiad's
tracks at Lake Placid. Even numbers seem to be lucky for the Ukrainian
athletes, as in the second and fourth rounds in Europe our sharpshooting
women skiers showed excellent results. And now, across the ocean, they
also did well: Olena Zubrylova took the silver in the sprint and gold in
the pursuit, then came out second in the team relay, together with her
teammates. In the team standing Olena Zubrylova and Olena Petrova placed
third and ninth, respectively. One is getting used to their top-notch performance,
which is a good sign, reports The Day's Oleksandr HONCHARUK.
Eagle to Soar Over Europe!
Kyiv Sokil (Eagle) came out on top of the East European Hockey League ahead
of time thanks to its wins of 6:0 and 3:0 over Polymer of Novopolotsk,
Belarus. And it is interesting that Kyiv's Sports Palace was fuller than
at any time in the last decade. One wonders whether it is time to knock
on the door of the European League. Just wait until the April world championship
in Norway! Well, ratings are good but victories are better. We'll have
to see how Sokil passes its final exams.
Next awaits Grodno Neman in the East European Hockey League semifinals
for the League Cup. The five best teams and a rookie from Liepaja (Latvia)
Metallurgs will face off for a prize purse of $2000.
