1859: The first Sunday school opens in Kyiv, aimed at raising children in the spirit of Christian tradition.

1921: The Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church is reinstated. Vasyl Lypkivsky is ordained the first Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine.

1939: The Lviv branch of the Writers’ Union of Ukraine is formed.

1956: An anticommunist uprising begins in Hungary, to be suppressed by Soviet troops.

1958: Boris Pasternak is conferred the Nobel Prize in Literature for his novel Doctor Zhivago.

1990: The Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR adopts a decree abolishing Article 6 of the Constitution, concerning the leading role of the Communist Party, and accepts the letter of resignation by Vitalii Masol, Chairman of the Council of Ministers.

2002: The Nord-Ost siege begins after a group of armed Chechens take hostage the spectators of the Nord-Ost musical at the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow.
