Kyiv’s craftswomen have started embroidering a giant towel. It is seven meters long! According to Tetiana Shevchenko, head of the resource center of the Kyiv city center for women’s assistance, this is a unique towel, a charm of our capital, and will be finished on The Day of Kyiv, which will be celebrated in May, 2012.

The exact image to be embroidered on the towel was approved by an arts council which includes 13 respected persons: ethnographers, museum staff and professional embroiderers. The towel will show various times and epochs of life in Ukraine, from Trypillian culture to the present.

Thus, Trypillian-epoch images will be embroidered in pastel shades, while the Cossack age in presented in bright ones, St. Sophia Cathedral is to be made from golden threads, and “Tree of Life” will be coloured yellow, red, blue and black. Kyiv’s coat of arms and Archangel Michael (the city’s purported guardian angel) are a must for the towel, too.

By now, 200 embroideresses from the Kyiv region have joined this cultural and artistic action, and throughout the year the best craftswomen from other regions of our country will be able to take part in the birth of the unique towel of the Ukrainian capital.
