19 percent of Ukrainian families ready to adopt a child

Nineteen percent of all Ukrainian families (13.5 million) are prepared to adopt a child on condition that they receive social and material assistance from the state. These are the findings of an all-Ukraine survey “The Ukrainian Adoptive Family,” which were made public on June 6 by the Minister of Family, Youth, and Sports, Yuriy Pavlenko, at a roundtable called “Scholarly Research on Questions Relating to the Development of Family-Type Placements of Orphans and Neglected Children,” reports www.korrespondent.net.
The main objective of the survey, conducted by the State Institute for Family and Youth Problems, was to determine the most effective ways of developing family-type forms of raising orphans and neglected children. The minister announced that eight percent of Ukrainians are willing to form adoptive families, while six percent would like to set up family-type children’s homes. According to Pavlenko, the number of such homes in Ukraine has increased by 50 and that of adoptive families by 100.
During the roundtable the minister pointed to the need to adopt a uniform law on care for such children, since current normative acts are obsolete and require updating. The roundtable participants passed a resolution on providing scholarly and methodological support for the reform of children’s care.
“I am convinced that Ukrainians can be active adoptive parents; all we have to do is understand what needs to be done in order to encourage people to act in this direction. I am convinced that our research will help develop an active adoption process in Ukraine,” said Minister Pavlenko.
