Market Economy Status: USA Urges Ukraine On

The US has urged that Ukraine apply to have its non-market economy status revoked, believing that now is the right time for this, Interfax-Ukraine quotes US Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst as saying during his meeting with Economy Minister Valery Khoroshkovsky. Simultaneously, Ambassador Herbst stressed that Ukraine’s application should be supported by American businesses based in Ukraine and in particular the American Chamber of Commerce, since obtaining market economy status depends on the fulfillment of both economic and political conditions. The Ukrainian leadership has been actively trying to obtain market economy status for Ukraine since 2001, which provides certain advantages during antidumping investigations involving Ukrainian exports.
