Ecology on the Web

Ukraine’s contemporary economic status does not overly favor the identification and solving of ecology issues. However, today ecology is among the topics dominant all over the world. Since Ukraine wants to integrate into the European Union as soon as possible, it pays more and more attention to ecology issues. On August 29, the Environment XXI Public Diplomacy Center together with the All-Ukrainian Ecology League presented the Electronic Ecological Library information project on the Ukrainian Internet (www.ecoleague.net/library.img. The project is aimed at increasing public knowledge about our country’s ecological problems, their reasons, consequences, and ways to solve them. At present there are some ecological sites on the Ukrainian Internet, while the Electronic Ecological Library is designed to unite all the information in one place. The project’s executors believe that their electronic library will be useful for public organizations of ecological orientation, scholarly institutions, students, representatives of law enforcement structures, and industry. “The site is dedicated to working out new approaches to give the public information on ecological problems. We will publish the most recent information from conferences, round tables, and seminars and involve scholars and promising youth into our work,” said All-Ukrainian Ecology League First Deputy Chair Tetiana Tymochko.

By the time the site was presented it included around 1,000 sources of ecological information. Though its design is quite simple, in terms of functionality it meets its purpose, to provide versatile information. Its founders claim that this is only the beginning. Information on the site will be updated on a weekly basis. Since ecology is an integral science having a number of closely related branches of knowledge, in addition to purely ecological works, there are sections dealing with biology, geology, geography, philosophy, education, normative and legal bases on the site; it is also equipped with a index by topic. After introducing the audience to the already existing site, its creators assured one and all that in the immediate future an English language version of the catalog will appear, making it possible for the world community to familiarize itself with contemporary Ukrainian works in the sphere of environmental protection.
