AGAINST THE CULT OF VIOLENCE

The Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (united) is drawing the attention of people’s deputies to the necessity of drafting and implementing “urgent measures to protect public morality and conscience on Ukraine’s television, in video, and film rentals,” reads the fraction declaration signed by its leader Oleksandr Zinchenko. The declaration also notes that in terms of the volume of frequency in television, video, and information products featuring “acts of cruelty and violence, mass murders, and travesty of humanity and honor, Ukraine has overstepped the critical boundary.” Consequences of this process can be dozens of times as dangerous, wide-ranging, and destructive than direct terrorism against innocent people. SDPU(o) insists on the need to work out a system of measures to improve the situation radically, reports UNIAN. Basically, the statement reads, it is necessary for all state institutions accredited to implement state policy in the information sphere to their strengthen regulation and control functions to the fullest extent. Among high priorities the statement singled out the need to apply effective oversight to all subjects of the nation’s information theater in order to put an end to showings of unlicensed product, to implement an effective system to formulate a state order on creating quality television and film production corresponding to national moral values, providing compulsory sex and violence age-related rating categories for television shows, reinforcing state control over TV products shown on new technology systems, as well as preventing the distribution of pirated video and audio tapes in Ukraine. Otherwise, the united Social Democrats warn, Ukrainians will “destroy themselves as a nation striving for civilized standards of life.”
