UT-1 Canvassed for Kuchma Even During the Funeral of A Great Singer
The Day's editors have received a copy of the letter sent by Chairman of the League of Ukrainian Journalists Ihor Lubchenko to the National TV Company of Ukraine and its president Vadym Dolhanov. The letters says, among other things:
«On Monday, August 2, Ukrainian Television news bulletins repeatedly showed footage of a sad event: last tributes to singer Anatoly Solovianenko. Each time it was said that the President and Prime Minister of Ukraine approached the coffin with the deceased. And not a single word that this mournful function was also attended by the Verkhovna Rada Speaker, who is, like the current head of state, a candidate for the No 1 post, as well as by other presidential candidates.
«I am also worried by the fact that the first national TV channel, funded by taxpayers, is becoming more and more biased, does not reflect the whole gamut of life, and in this case grossly violates the laws of Ukraine, including the one that guarantees all presidential candidates equal opportunities for TV coverage of their election- campaign activities.
«I urge you to follow the principles of journalist ethics and high professionalism. I want to remind you again that elections and presidents are transient, while we remain working in our profession. Life will also go on after October 31. Let us do our utmost not to feel ashamed in front of our audience and ourselves on November 1.»
