Honore de Balzac's bicentennial has been marked in Zhytomyr oblast. The
author of La comedie humaine and his ties with Ukraine were the
topic of an international local history conference held in Berdychiv recently
on Berdychiv Land in the Context of Ukrainian History, reports The Day's
Valery KOSTIUKEVYCH. A restored memorial plaque was unveiled on
the facade of St. Barbara's Cathedral where Balzac wedded Eveline Hanska.
The next day the Spring of Prometheus gala literary-drama show took
place at the village of Verkhivnia, Ruzhyn district, where Balzac, nearing
his death, spent almost two years at Hanska's estate. Balzac's and Hanska's
letters were read from a makeshift stage in front of the former estate,
classical arias, romances and folk songs were performed by Zhytomyr actors
and local amateurs. According to Marc Sagniol, director of the French Cultural
Center in Ukraine attending the festivities, Balzac's historical linkage
to Ukraine and such large-scale festivities in his memory are of great
importance in the context of French-Ukrainian mutual cultural enrichment.
