Mariupol's Metallurh Revenges
Kyiv Dynamo
The alumni of Mykola Pavlov, now on a training session in the Israeli city
of Hemlon, held a control match with Moscow's Spartak, the champion of
Russia, which recently beat Kyiv Dynamo in the Commonwealth Cup finals.
As The Day correspondent Serhiy MAKHUN was told by the Mariupol
Metallurh press service, the Muscovites in fact put out a first-string
team; besides, they used as a substitute Dmitry Alenichev who plays for
Italian Roma where he mostly sits on the bench. Spartak coaches Oleh Romantsev
and Vyacheslav Grozny closely watched the performance of their players.
As soon as Vitaly Pantilov opened the score in the seventh minute, the
Russians rushed to equalize the score but, instead, conceded a second goal
in the 73rd minute (Stepan Malokutsko). The Ukrainian top division's also-ran
finally won the game 2:0. Meanwhile, in Zurich the second-string Kyiv Dynamo
team finished third in a mini-soccer tournament. Our fellow countrymen
lost the semifinals to the future winner, the Swiss Serviette, with a score
2:3,. In the consolation match Dynamo gave Marseilles, leader for the French
championship, no chances and won 6:2.
Handball
Ukraine's clubs have completed their play in European cups. In a repeat
match of the Champions' League quarterfinals, the Zaporizhzhia men's Motor
club lost in Zagreb to Croatia's Badel-1862 with a score 22:26 (the Ukrainian
team also lost the first match - 21:22). The Zaporizhzhia women's Motor
drew the final sixth match in the D group of the Champions' League with
the Polish club Montex - 23:23 - and finished fourth, the last, with three
points.
Biathlon
Ukrainian Oksana Khvostenko won a bronze medal in the women's 7.5-km sprint
in the European championship in Izhevsk. Ukrainian under-19s finished third
in the 4 x 7.5-km relay, although after the first stage (done by Oksana's
brother Oleksandr) they were first.
