A short touring performance of the French Alef Theater with the play Assassination
in Valparaiso proved to be an event not so much in the theater life
of Kyiv as in its high life. The performance, which really did radiate
the discreet charm of the bourgeoisie, exemplified theater as a refined
form of leisure. Here there was no intention to keep the spectator on edge.
Because the audience should relax and enjoy the performance first and foremost.
And to this end everything should be clear and familiar to it, thinks Hanna
SHERMAN, The Day. Everything means a cozy life orchestra, a
cabaret style diversion, touching songs a la Police Commissioner Colombo,
and, of course, Pierre Richard who looked like he had only just descended
directly from the film screen. Add the actors' cues in Russian and Ukrainian
as well as those of the interpreter acting as a personage. Perhaps, the
only thing that the actors overlooked is the fact that we falsely expect
sensations from foreign stars. But perhaps we might consider ourselves
instead.
