The Ukrainian national team was defeated by the British team 0:5 in the first group of Davis Cup competition. On the first day Andriy Rybalko lost to Greg Rusedsky - 4:6, 0:6, 4:6 and Andriy Medvediev lost to Tim Hanman - 2:6, 7:6, (7:4), 4:6, 6:1, 1:6. In doubles Medvediev and Rybalko lost 4:6, 5:7, 6:7, (9:11) and on the last day Hanman defeated Rybalko and Rusedsky beat Medvedev. In the world league the Zimbabwe national team defeated Australia 3:2. In addition, national teams of Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, the USA, and Belgium made it to the quarter-finals.
