Sensation in Amsterdam with the World Cup Soccer Quarterfinals

Moscow Spartak was the biggest surprise in Amsterdam with their underdog win over Ajax. In the first place, the season in Holland is in full swing with Ajax leading by a wide margin. Spartak, by contrast, had little in the way of serious play. And the lineup of both teams seemed to indicate a mismatch in the making with Michael Laudrup, Frank de Boer, and Danny Blind in quite another category from Aleksandr Shirko or Valery Kechinov. But the two latter turned out to be the heroes of the match which ended 3:1. The Moscow team’s chances of going on to the semifinals now seem excellent.
