40 years without Alla Horska

On November 29, 1970 the famous Ukrainian Sixtier artist was found brutally murdered in a Vasylkiv house.

The mysterious circumstances of her murder have not been fully clarified. Publicist and human rights champion Yevhen Sverstiuk writes about the magnificent image of Alla Horska in the following way: “We return to the personality of Alla Horska because today we are lacking her so much in our society. We want her to continue to perform her role of a fighter for the common cause, for the honor of the nation, for its high altar.” And Raisa Moroz, who took part in the national resistance as well, considers that “there are very few women like her in the world.” Why do we keep returning to the name of Alla Horska again and again? The thing is not only about the artist’s tragic death connected with her civic stand. It is more than that. For in that time other talented people were murdered, and the muffled echo of those events was gradually covered with the clouds of other troubles. But people of spiritual dimension never fall into oblivion. Like many people with a similar fate, Horska did not come out from a lower stratum. The road was paved for her. A girl from a nomenklatura family, besides generously gifted by nature and very well-bred, she had a model biography.

She graduated with honors from the schools of the Art Institute and married a talented painter Viktor Zaretsky, and they lived in an apartment in the center of Kyiv. But at the beginning of the 1960s the strong and talented people had to choose their path. Weak persons with a good starting capital did not have any problems, for the circumstances resolved everything for them.
