A letter to Nadia Savchenko
Ukrposhta urges Ukrainians to send their words of encouragement directly to the pilot at the Moscow prison
National mail service provider offers Ukrainians to write a personal letter in order to support Nadia Savchenko and send it to the following address: “Savchenko Nadezhda Viktorovna, 107076, Moscow, 18 Matrosskaya Tishina St., Federal Institution “SIZO-1,” Russian Federal Penitentiary Service Administration.”
According to Ukrposhta officials, they hope that the letters, sent in large numbers, will not only provide additional support to illegally detained Savchenko, but also demonstrate to the Russian authorities the willingness of Ukrainians to fight for our heroine.
“Nadia has many friends, who convey letters to her,” as Ukrposhta press service quotes Vira, sister of Nadia Savchenko. “All the kind words she reads in these letters are very heartwarming for Nadia, she feels as if she returns home for a moment. She receives many letters both from Ukraine and from Russia.
“As you know, Nadia Savchenko was only recently allowed to receive letters,” says Ihor Tkachuk, Acting General Director of Ukrposhta, in a commentary to The Day. “Ukrposhta is the national mail operator, its mission is to keep the connection and unite people across the world, and thus we decided to make our own contribution in order to support the Ukrainian pilot, who had become the symbol of Ukrainian spirit. We hope that our people will actively respond to our call and send a multitude of letters to encourage Nadia. As her closest relatives and friends say, she loves receiving and reading letters from people who care about her, because every letter she gets imparts a little of the sender’s soul.”
According to Tkachuk, there are no plans so far to issue in mass circulation an envelope or a post stamp with Nadia’s picture. However, anyone may use Ukrposhta’s “own stamp” service, ordering a stamp that depicts the legendary Ukrainian pilot and sending a letter with such stamps anywhere in the world.
