Kyiv’s International Exhibition Center has hosted a dog exhibit, called Golden Gate 2011. According to the Canine Society of Ukraine press center, an all-time record number of dog owners submitted their bids this year – more than 5,000. Applicants were from Ukraine, the US, Canada, the UK, Finland, Spain, Poland, Bulgaria, the Baltic states, Russia, Belarus, Moldova, etc. The exhibit displayed over 170 breeds, from such popular breeds as Labradors, Yorkshire Terriers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Dachshunds, to such exotic breeds as Lhasa Apso, Australian Shepherd, and the Dogo Canario.
In addition to official sections, audiences could see the competitions “Glamour Dog” for best costume for masters and dogs, “The Best Children’s Drawing,” as well as the traditional, spectacular contests “The Young Landler” for very young dog-breeders, and “The Best in Show.” A Welsh Corgi Pembroke dog from Russia was pronounced the best. The Welsh Corgi is a small, short-legged, but very agile and buoyant, British shepherd breed.
It is known for being the British queen’s favorite dog. The average price of a Welsh Corgi pup in Ukraine is 1,000 dollars. International dog shows are organized by the Canine Society of Ukraine, the Federation of Hunting Dog Breeding in Ukraine, and the Central Club of the Owners of German Shepherds in Ukraine. A part of the raised funds is traditionally handed over to a Kyiv orphanage.
