Donetsk Railway Museum celebrates its tenth anniversary
Since its creation it has managed to collect over ten thousand authentic exhibits. These include, for example, heavy kerosene lanterns, which were used by carriage attendants before the era of electricity, or a complete set of railroad track repair-worker’s tools. However, the most popular ones are, of course, the old steam locomotives. Volodymyr Donchenko, the museum’s director, says the mining region’s capital was able to gather one of Ukraine’s largest collections of these amazing, charming machines. The real jewel of the collection is a miniature shunting locomotive, a so-called “choo-choo”, which was found at an industrial enterprise. Fortunately, the museum is situated almost next to the Donetsk railway station. Therefore, besides the numerous national tours, it often accepts visitors from abroad. Perhaps it is the railway passengers who are fortunate, as almost everybody has some free time at the station, and this time is worth spending on familiarizing oneself with the symbols of the past age, that has forever left the steel rails to find peace here in the museum courtyard.
