Atlantic Crossing Rates Order
President Kuchma has signed an order conferring the Order of Conspicuous Gallantry, 3rd Class, on Theodore Rezvoi of Odesa for his solo crossing the Atlantic, reports Interfax Ukraine referring to the PR department of the Presidential Administration. The Day told about the crossing (No. 5, February 12) lasting 67 days and covering over 5,000 km, marking the world’s second record after a French rower. The voyage started October 12, 2001, at the port of La Gomera, Canary Islands, and ended in the Barbados. The man crossed the ocean in his Odesa boat, becoming the twentieth man to have made a solo crossing over the past hundred years and the fifth to row across the Atlantic. Before him similar feats were performed by a British subject, a Frenchman, an American, and a Brazilian. The solo mariner received a gold trophy and a key to a two-room apartment from Serhiy Hrynevetsky, head of the Odesa regional state administration along with a diploma from the government of Ukraine. Mr. Rezvoi plans another Atlantic crossing with a longer route from the African to the North American coast.
