Renowned Figures of Culture And Education Receive Awards

The council of the Ukraine XXI Century Foundation for Intellectual Cooperation headed by People’s Deputy Bohdan Hubsky has recently made known the names of this year’s Vernadsky award laureates and recipients of lifetime stipends for outstanding intellectual contributions to Ukraine’s social, economic, and cultural development. According to the fund’s press service, the new laureates are biologist and Academician of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences Platon Kostiuk, historians Ivan Kuras and Valery Smoliy, jurist Vasyl Tatsy, Academy of Sciences corresponding members astrophysicist Oleksandr Konovalenko, botanist, director of the Hryshko National Botanical Gardens Tetiana Cherevchenko, academician of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences Prof. Volodymyr Bondar, former director general of KryvorizhStal works, now Vice Premier Oleh Dubyna, poet and academician Borys Oliynyk, conductor, pedagogue Pavlo Muravsky, film director Roman Balayan, sculptor, Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Association of Artists Volodymyr Chepelyk, and Mykhailo Sykorsky, director of the Pereyaslav National Historical and Ethnographic Preserve. Incidentally, for the first time in the two years since it was introduced the award will go to representatives of the Ukrainian diaspora, director of the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University of the USA Roman Szporluk along with writer and head of the Association of Ukrainians in Russia Oleksandr Rudenko-Desniak. Six more persons have been granted lifetime stipends. The stipend will amount to UAH 200 per month. Each laureate will receive a gratuity of UAH 10,000 with honorary diplomas and medals.
