Three thousand kilometers To The Guinness Book Of World Records
A press conference was held last Tuesday in the Kyiv office of British Airways for the renowned Armenian traveler Serhiy Martyrosian. Of Nahirny Karabakh origin, he began his missionary work in 1993 with the aim of seeking a peaceful co- existence between various peoples. It is because of his volunteer mission that the press dubbed him “pilgrim of the world”. Martyrosian, age 68, believes he will continue travelling for 6-7 years to come. After that, according to his estimates, he will be recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the first person to cover over 40,000 kilometers on foot. His record boasts of nearly 37,000 kilometers that he has covered travelling throughout 55 different countries. Serhiy believes his major achievements are his trip across North America from coast to coast, covering the distance from Marathon to Athens, and ascending an Egyptian Pyramid. His stays within various conflict zones brought him all kinds of encounters. Chechnya, however, was one of the most memorable experiences, as he “saw hell itself” there; meanwhile, in Yugoslavia a Ukrainian peacekeeper helped him get out of the conflict zone and led him to the Hungarian border. Responding to questions by The Day correspondent Mykhailo Zubar, if he had any health problems, the pilgrim assured everyone present that in all his years of travel he had not been sick one single time, that he feels just fine and intends to beat the record of his grandfather, who died at the age of 118.
