The An-140 Shows for The First Time

«Ukraine is going to show the first flight of an An-140 short-haul passenger airplane at the MAKS-99 international aerospace exhibition to be held on August 17-22, 1999, at Zhukovsky, near Moscow,» Dmytro Kiva, deputy general designer at the Antonov Aviation Research-cum-Production Complex (ARPC), told The Day .

The Zhukovsky sky will also see the performance of the An- 70 military cargo aircraft which, according to Mr. Kiva, has not lost chances to win the international tender and become the basic model of a plane to be purchased by European countries to equip their armed forces. In addition to these two favorites, the Russian audience will observe the show flights of an An-32P fire-fighter and the An- 38 27-seat passenger aircraft, equipped with U.S.-made engines and produced for the second year in a row in Novosibirsk under an Antonov ARPC license. This plane can be utilized both for passenger-carrying and military purposes. Also on display will be a «work horse:» the crop-dusting An-3, a modernized high-performance «gooney-bird.»

A Ukrainian delegation plans to hold a new round of talks with representatives of the military agencies of the Russian Federation, Germany and Italy in pursuance of the An-70 military transportation project, which may shape this Ukrainian-Russian aircraft's further destiny.
