President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma does not rule out he
will take a number of measures in connection with the suspension of his
right to issue decrees on economic matters not governed by law. It will
be recalled the President used these powers for three years, as stipulated
by the Constitution. The term of these powers, clearly defined by the Constitution,
expires on June 28.
Answering the questions of journalists, Mr. Kuchma said he "would not like to talk" about the specific measures he can take.
At the same time, Mr. Kuchma said such measures are permitted by the
Constitution. "I do not rule them out," the President noted. Mr. Kuchma
said he was "surprised" by the fact that "our respected Parliament ignored,
as always, the viewpoint of the congress of the Ukrainian League of Industrialists
and Entrepreneurs" which had requested Verkhovna Rada to prolong by a year
the President's right to issue decrees on economic matters not governed
by law, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
