People Ready to Support Opposition

23 марта, 00:00

Being an opposition politician is difficult in Ukraine. Those who wield power in this country have a simple and inexpensive method of political advertising - doing at least something.

This guarantees front-page coverage in the media they control. And since the current regime has done all it could to smother almost all independent media, any opposition is either ineffectual or nonexistent. For example, last weekend Oleksandr Moroz visited Dnipropetrovsk, and Yevhen Marchuk Khmelnytsky, Rivne, and Lutsk. Not a single scene from these legislators' visits was covered by television.

Let us note that political figures, who travel in and outside Ukraine, and much of the media that cover their visits are currently maintained at our expense as taxpayers. Those who worry over the current administration spending the public money in the presidential elections can calm down - this money is already being spent at full throttle. And not only for media coverage of the "potential candidate." What is the real worth of this candidate's (the current President's) or his Premier's promises to "help" a certain enterprise or village? They are again found deserving of our money, which our budget perpetually lacks, for example, to pay wages and pensions.

The opposition has been deprived of all the advantages the current government has pocketed. It can only rely on its own resources and those of elements unafraid to risk helping it.

Our citizens are all too well aware of the position taken by the powers-that-be. Hence, The Day enables its readers to learn more about the activities of the opposition. Our correspondents' reports on the regional visits of Yevhen Marchuk, one of the strongest presidential candidates, show: despite all the propaganda efforts of the current government, the people are ready to support new leaders.
