Thursday marked the eightieth jubilee of the Dnipro Flotilla which fought
heroically during World War II. The memorial on Poshtova Ploshcha Square
by the river was visited by seven persons: two press photographers, two
surviving veterans, two sympathizers, and Vasyl Arestov, head of the city
Socialist committee. According to The Day's photographer Viktor
Marushchenko, the ceremony lasted exactly four minutes.
The Socialist dignitary brought a small basket of flowers and placed
it at the foot of the monument. No rally or speeches followed, except a
red placard reading "Socialist Party of Ukraine" which was unfolded and
folded up in a minute, leaving several passers-by mystified as to what
it was all about.
