World Concerned with Illegal Export of Women

Ukrainian women become one of the nation's most competitive export items. The business of transporting women abroad for prostitution has gained such huge scope that even US President Bill Clinton has recently promised to help Ukraine block the channels for this white slavery.

According to the Illegal Women's Migration Conference, which was initiated and held last Monday by the NIS-USA Women's Consortium, the most critical situation exists in Kyiv, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Odesa, and Lviv oblasts. According to UNIAN, the participants emphasized that current Ukrainian legislation has no definition of white slavery. The legislation, in particular the Criminal Code, must be amended. The problem is not really new and is characteristic of the regions which have a poor economic situation, unemployment, and organized crime. And there are no criteria to determine how many Ukrainian women are forced into prostitution abroad, the conference pointed out.
