Shevchenko’s legacy on display

“Obrazotvorcha Shevchenkiana,” best translated as “Shevchenko’s Creative Legacy,” is now on public display at the Donetsk Regional Art Museum, in conjunction with Shevchenko’s 200th birth anniversary. Over 100 items, including paintings, prints, and sculptures created by Ukraine’s 57 noted artists, including works by Mykola Hlushchenko, Karpo Trokhymenko, Heorhii Melikhov, Yurii Zorko. Their pictures portray scenes from Shevchenko’s life and illustrations of his literary works.

Prints by Mykhailo Derehus, Vasyl Kasiian, et al., are displayed on a large scope the merits the artists’ prestige. Shevchenko used innovative etching techniques and was acknowledged by the Academy of Art of St. Petersburg as Russia’s first etcher.

There are a lot of young people among the visitors – proof that our younger generation is interested in Shevchenko’s legacy. Maria Oliinyk, deputy head of the Donetsk regional organization of the Prosvita Society, says this is only natural, considering that Shevchenko’s verse is graphic proof of his foresight of what would happen to Ukraine: in terms of politics as well as daily realities.
