Movie Theater “Kyiv” will host the American Film Festival “Independence” on December 13 through 19. The program includes nominees and winners at festivals held in Sundance, Locarno, Berlin, Cannes, etc. The festival’s opening screening will offer the audience Nebraska, directed by talented Alexander Payne, awarded the Cannes Film Festival Best Actor Prize and nominated for the Golden Palm. The film tells the story of a father and son, trekking together and trying to understand and reach out to each other. The list of other program items, including nominees and winners at festivals held in Sundance, Locarno, Berlin, and Cannes, can be found at the festival’s website aiffua.com. The organizers have promised that the films’ producers and directors will give talks before Kyiv screenings. This year’s festival will include for the first time the “Indie Lab – Series” project, offering workshops on filming from composing script to the final version. The documentary program will screen nine films, highly diverse in their topics, in the Cinematheque auditorium. Sponsored by the US Embassy in Ukraine, the American Independence Film Festival’s motto is “Independent cinema for independent people.” As the organizers emphasize, their goal is to acquaint Ukrainian audience with American independent cinema, present new ideas, and demonstrate an original perspective on social, religious, and political issues.
