This year, the Cannes Film Festival saw the 10th ceremony of the Krzysztof Kieslowski ScripTeast Award for Best Film Script from Central and Eastern Europe, recognizing works written and developed within the screenwriting program of the Independent Cinema Foundation. The program involved 11 projects from 7 countries in Central and Eastern Europe, according to the Ukrainian State Film Agency.

Besides the award itself, Nikitiuk’s script When the Trees are Falling also received 10,000 euros for subsequent production of the film.

“This is a very happy event for me and for the film project as a whole, although it is a big responsibility as well. It was Ukraine’s first participation in the ScripTeast program, and I hope that my script’s success will establish a good tradition for Ukrainian authors and directors,” Nikitiuk said in her acceptance speech.

The film is produced by Dyrektoria Kino company under Ihor Savychenko’s leadership, and the shooting is scheduled to start in August 2016.

Let us recall that this project has already got the State Film Agency’s support and been put into production, since it won the seventh competitive selection held by the agency and received state funding amounting to 10 million hryvnias. Previously, the project was recognized as the best proposal at the Odesa International Film Festival’s pitching session in 2014 and was presented at the Baltic Events, DAB, and MAIA Workshops. The film will reach Ukrainian audience as soon as 2017.
