Dear Readers, Every Day for You!

12 December, 00:00

Volodymyr PANKEYEV, first deputy editor-in-chief:

“I has always been lucky professionally. A samizdat magazine in my final years at the university, the former Postup and Post-Postup immediately after graduation, and, finally, The Day.

“I hope that, as long as there are newspapers (and, hence, readers) of The Dayformat, Ray Bradbury’s sad prophesy in his novel, Fahrenheit 451, will not come true.”

Natalia LIHACHOVA, deputy editor-in-chief:

“During a recent press conference, Vice Premier Mykola Zhulynsky thanked The Dayfor publishing different opinions about the way the media cover actions of the Cabinet of Ministers (The Day, No. 34 of November 28, “Government: Information War or Deserved Criticism”). What I also appreciate the most in my newspaper is its policy to present several points of view about the most acute issues of our time, be it the fuel and energy situation, plans to build the Independence Monument, or the real spread of corruption in this country... Yes, sometimes we also lack a 100% balance in covering all perspectives. Still, I do not remember practically a single controversial subject that we presented a basically one sided and biased manner. Moreover, recently The Dayhas also striven to differentiate more clearly the presentation of and comments on facts by our own and outside experts.

“Yes, there are not so many newspapers today, which try to analyze more or less objectively and critically the ongoing processes and trends in our politics, economy, and culture. Still fewer are publications that substantiate alternative viewpoints. So if you want to read five days a week a publication without blinders, one which openly stands its ground and does not silence different perspectives, subscribe to The Day. This is your chance to get accurate information and have a real choice. It is also an opportunity to see yourselves among the contributors to our newspaper, for only The Daycarries so many debatable articles and letters from its readers.”

Viktor ZAMYATIN:

“Our journalistic colleagues in the West have a saying: ‘Television will show something, the radio will say something, but only a newspaper will explain it all.’ This is why working for a newspaper is considered perhaps not the most profitable but a most prestigious job.

The Dayseems to manage not only to give succinct information but also to explain exactly what is happening and why in and outside this country and where it could lead. It is perhaps for this reason that The Day’s view is reckoned with, and the paper’s editorial office is visited by politicians, diplomats, and culture figures on their own accord. Perhaps this is why many begin their mornings by reading a fresh Day. There have now been a thousand mornings like this, which in fact flew by.

“I hope there will be more jubilees ahead, which will pass in routine work aimed at furnishing the reader with fresh, exclusive, and genuine food for thought. In essence, The Dayhas become one of the few examples of normal journalism in Ukraine, what is now usually referred to as ‘European standards.’

“And tomorrow will bring another Day.”

Klara GUDZYK, columnist:

“You know there are some stubborn rivulets: no matter what comes in their way, they will run their course — despite all obstacles, garbage jams, unexpected turns, huge dirty puddles that can swallow you up completely, despite even the steep upward slopes under which you must wash out invisible tunnels. The stream often seems to have vanished, lost in the loose sands, but it then springs up again, blazing its winding path, like the Greek Meander. Where is it running to?”

Dmytro DESIATERYK:

“I loved The Dayas an ordinary reader well before I began to work for it. I still love it. I like The Dayfor its intellectualism, inclination to analysis, and thought provoking approach, things quite rare for a contemporary daily. For the reading public is far more intelligent than those who publish the yellow press think. But, unfortunately, readers are almost deprived of the right to choose a serious intellectual publication. The Dayprovides them this opportunity.”
