The opening of Den/The Day ’s photo exhibition and presentation of the book, Ukraine Incognita , edited by chief editor Larysa Ivshyna, became a great event in both cultural and intellectual life of Podillia. Vinnytsia was the nineteenth oblast center where the “New Day: Light and Shadows” photo exhibition has been featured. Oleksandr Hordiyevych, renowned Vinnytsia-based photo artist and winner of one of Den/The Day ’s previous contests stated, “It’s strange that such action is organized not by Photo Artists’ Union or Journalists’ Union but a newspaper — and the level of its organizing is surprisingly high. Den/The Day ’s annual photo contests are a true event in the life of Ukrainian photography art.”

Having familiarized himself with Ukrayina Incognita , Yury Zinko, Deputy Dean of the History Department at the Vinnytsia Pedagogical University, observed that this wonderful book should have a significantly bigger press-run. (What’s the problem? We are ready to release a second edition and are open for proposals — Ed. ). Because relatively few books were printed, they can’t get to every educational institution, or for that matter, the broad audience. However, in Zinko’s opinion, the articles collected in Ukrayina Incognita are worth it. “The collection accentuates on the understudied moments of our history, which previously were discussed only superficially,” Prof. Zinko stressed. “The in-depth view in the articles from Ukraine Incognita makes it possible to use it as a textbook. The book deserves being brought to university audiences, because it infuses the youth with national pride.”

A copy of Ukraine Incognita was presented to the Vinnytsia Local History Museum, which hosted the exhibition, as a gift on the occasion of its 85th anniversary. The exhibition opening was attended by local mass media representatives, local intelligentsia and authorities. Among positive features of the exposition, spectators noted the fact that it unites pictures both from the life of Kyiv beau monde and average people. “The pictures are so full of life that each of them is like a whole newspaper issue,” says Vasyl Tsyhaniuk, director of the local library.
