By bizarre coincidence, once I read about this event, a friend of mine came to me and with great enthusiasm began showing photos made from the old films from more than a decade ago. Right at that moment I decided that I would write about film photo. After all, no modern “digital” tool would give the special charm to the images, unique to the photos made with a good old “point and shoot” camera! Perhaps, that’s why all these retro filters in instagram are so popular nowadays.

I have some friends photographers, who use modern photo equipment, but often give themselves pleasure of shooting with an old “Fed” or “Kyiv” camera. One of these friends can shoot one film for over a year. He says that he simply “stretches” the pleasure by carefully selecting the plot, perspective, light, and other technical parameters avoiding careless average shooting. In short, you probably shouldn’t mindlessly shoot gigabytes of digital photos, three quarters of which will be deleted anyway.

I am not a staunch opponent of new technology. I just love the mood and atmosphere created by a good photo, regardless of what was used to make it.

I think that anyone has at least once caught himself thinking that he sees the world differently than others. That means that everyone looks around in his own special way. Thus, in my opinion, it is very useful to view other people’s photos to “expand one’s horizons” and to establish mutual understanding between people. After all, these photos make a kind of 3D-image of the world, formed from special views of a great number of different people. And it is not that important whether the photos you look at are professional or amateur.

So, I would like to remind everyone, who would like to become a co-creator of such 3D-image of the world and Ukraine in particular, that The Day’s 15th Photo Contest is still open until September 15. You can read more detailed information about the contest on our website day.kiev.ua. We look forward to your special view of the world and Ukraine. Enjoy shooting!
