“I am grateful to Den for having strengthened my civic stance”
As the country is waging an information war, thoughtful and responsible media workers are in great demand. As Larysa Ivshyna posted on Den’s Summer School of Journalism’s Facebook group, “we need followers of high-quality, aggressive journalism!” Last year’s graduates of the school sent letters to this newspaper stating that the current difficult situation made them realize that Den was not only a school of standards and analysis, but, above all, a venue where individual ideological values were shaped. Only people with a real backbone and knowledge of their people’s history can withstand Russian propaganda. All students have a chance to go through a “training camp” of quality journalism. “I still remember that wonderful July 2013, when I was an integral part of Den, a piece of the creative team jigsaw puzzle. I believed before that it was my journalistic practice, involving meeting interesting people and doing dynamic creative work with good friends from different parts of Ukraine, that helped me understand what I really wanted for myself and my future career. However, in view of what happened in my country this year, and what I see on the streets of Donetsk and my hometown of Sloviansk, I have realized that the main lesson of the Summer School for me has been ‘How to love one’s homeland.’
“Talking to editor-in-chief Ivshyna, guests of the newspaper, Den’s journalists and my fellow students hardened my critical thinking and desire to get to the truth, to make my own decisions, to be honest with myself. It allows me to try and stay calm and objectively assess the situation in my region, and sometimes even succeed in opening the eyes of those who are influenced by the information war that a neighboring state is waging against us. I am grateful to Den for having strengthened my civic stance, which is now saving me from malice and dirt abounding around.”
