In the region of Sumy Lenin has been replaced with Kalnyshevsky

In the center of the village of Nedryhailiv, Sumy oblast, a monument to the last ataman of Zaporozhian Sich Petro Kalnyshevsky has been sanctified. It was erected on the place where for decades a monument to Lenin used to stand.

The liturgy to commemorate the Cossacks’ commander was served in the Cathedral of Most Holy Righteous Longsuffering Pyotr by the Patriarch of Kyiv and all Ukraine Filaret.

This five-dome cathedral in Cossack’s baroque style appeared in the center of Nedryhailiv in 2011 on the place of the cathedral destroyed in the Soviet time.

It was constructed for the donations of parishioners and sponsors. The clergy, Cossacks, locals and guests from different regions of Ukraine took part in a procession to the monument to the legendary ataman who originated from the region of Sumy.

The figure of Kalnyshevsky had been poured in bronze ahorse and established on a six-meter granite pedestal. The idea is a brainchild of an academician, People’s Artist of Ukraine, the Shevchenko Prize laureate Anatolii Haidamaka and sculptor Petro Drozdovsky.
