1649: Bohdan Khmelnytsky is elected Hetman of Ukraine.
1848: The literary and educational society Halytsko-Ruska Matytsia is established in Lviv by the Supreme Ruthenian Council.
1938: The first convention (“congress”) of Soviet Ukrainian artists is held [in Kharkiv]; it establishes the Artists’ Union of Ukraine.
1941: Soviet troops retreat from Kharkiv after pitched battles with the Wehrmacht.
1941: Troops of the Third Ukrainian Front enter Dnipropetrovsk in the course of a military operation named after the city.
1950: Azovkabel Works starts manufacturing in Zaporizhia oblast.
1995: President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine pays an official visit to Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, signing 15 international and intergovernmental agreements.
